Coparenting isn’t always easy for my ex and I, in fact I have to treat it like any other skill and practice new ways to communicate and compromise daily.
While it sucks to admit, sometimes things get worse before they get better and that was my situation at the start.
And no this isn’t where I tell you exactly when things will improve or that with 3 simple steps things will get easier overnight — because in many ways defining a coparenting dynamic truly finalizes the end of a relationship and that’s a hard process. However just because breakups are hard doesn’t mean co-parenting should be.
Once you and your Coparent set boundaries and a schedule, try to only communicate in a way that isn’t based around personal feelings but rather your child’s overall development and happiness. There may be days that things don’t go your way, but remember the goal isn’t to get your way but to build stability for your child and to make sure they’re comfortable with the new parenting dynamic.
To my fellow parents navigating this journey please allow patience and understanding to guide your choices even when you’re pulled to react with rage. Trust me, I know it’s hard but the only way to find a solution is to remain calm and focus on the overall goal — raising a well rounded child, everything else is irrelevant.
Even on the hard days, just keep calm and Coparent.
